Uniforms.

  • Gi - We will not check or measure the gi prior to competition. However, Trident Tournament officials have the right to ask a competitor to change his/her gi if it is deemed to be inappropriate. Reasons for this situation to occur include but are not limited to; gi is too short or long, too many patches that prevent the gi from being gripped, wet or dirty, smelly, too many patches. 

  • Rash guards may be worn under the gi. This does not include regular shirts.

  • No Gi - Jiu Jitsu specific shorts are recommended, however other board shorts / athletic style shorts may be worn if they comply to the following; no pockets, OR pockets sewn completely shut. Pant length to be no higher than mid thigh and no longer than the knees. Shorts must not have ANY hard plastic or metal pieces. Spats (long elastic type pants) can be worn under the shorts if desired. Tops must be a rash guard or other elastic type top. Regular shirts cannot we worn. Tops must be worn at all times, competing without a shirt is not permitted. Clothing does not need to be "graded" or adhere to any particular colour requirement. 

  • Any uniform issues raised by referees can be taken to the event organiser. If the uniform is deemed to be unacceptable the athlete may risk disqualification. 

Hygiene

  • Finger nails and toe nails should be trimmed and clean.

  • Long hair needs to be reasonably restrained. If it is interfering with the match, the match may be paused in order for the athlete to rectify the situation. If this continues to be an issue a point may be awarded to opponent. 

  • Skin lesions or any other skin conditions will be directed to medical staff and the tournament organiser. Medical staff and tournament organiser will make final decision on whether an athlete is allowed to compete. If you have a skin condition that is visible but not contagious and not able to be covered, it would be best practice to have a letter from a doctor available for confirmation.

  • Hair dyes or makeup that stain or discolour mats or opponents uniform will cause the athlete to be disqualified. 

Weigh-Ins

  • We ask that you make sure to be present in the venue at least 60 minutes prior your division start time as well in case we are able to get head starts on certain division.

  • You must be weighted at least 60 minutes before you division is scheduled to start. 

  • Weigh ins open 60 minutes prior to the first scheduled division for the day. 

  • There will be a 500g allowance.

  • If extra time is required to make weight, the allowable time will depend on division schedules etc. tournament officials will determine the allowable extra time to make weight. Usage of the scales to check weight is to be "within reason" for example weighing yourself every 5 minutes will not be allowed.

  • Athletes who fail to make weight during the designated period will be disqualified and will not be moved up to another weight division. Athletes who are disqualified will not be eligible for a refund. It is the athlete’s responsibility to make the weight class they signed up for, or have changed to a higher weight class by that event’s change deadline.

  • Weigh-in's DO NOT need to be done while wearing the GI. 

  • An athlete who competes in both their Gi and NoGi divisions only has to weigh-in once.

Match Duration
  • All adult matches, including the finals will be 5 minutes unless specified different. 

  • All teen matches, including the finals will be 4 minutes.

  • All kids matches, including finals will be 3 minutes.

Match Scoring
  • Trident Tournament matches follow traditional BJJ point scoring: 4 for the mount, 4 for the back, 3 for a guard pass, 2 for a sweep, 2 for a take down, 2 for knee on stomach, and 2 for a solid submission attempt that was stopped out of bounds.

  • All positions must be held and controlled for 3 seconds.

  • There is no “Advantage” scoring.

  • A first penalty will result in a warning, a second penalty will result in the opponent being given 2 points, a third penalty will result in disqualification.

  • If a match finishes in a draw, the referee of the match will declare a winner by Referee Decision at their discretion.

  • A match will be deemed over immediately if a competitor taps out, screams, or verbally gives up during the match.
